Whether you’re moving out for the first time or relocating to a new home, there is a lot to consider when choosing an apartment. Below are just a few important questions to consider when apartment-hunting.

Which floor?

It’s important to consider which floor you will be living on. A ground-floor apartment can be more accessible – potentially making it more suitable if you have mobility issues, kids, or pets. Carrying groceries in and moving furniture will be easier if you’re on a lower story. However, upper-story apartments can come with great views and potentially balconies, which can make them a more attractive option for some people.

Is it furnished?

While some apartments require you to buy all your own furniture and appliances, other apartments come completely furnished. A furnished apartment could save you a lot of money if you’re moving out for the first time. Of course, if you already own furniture and appliances, you may prefer a non-furnished apartment so that you can take your existing furniture and appliances with you.

What shared amenities does the block have?

Shared amenities in apartment blocks can include everything from community gardens to laundry rooms. Some even have private gyms and pools for residents. Other apartment blocks may have no shared amenities. Apartments with lots of amenities will usually cost more to rent or may come with high service fees, which is something to consider.

What’s included in the rent?

Some landlords may pay for energy bills, utility bills, internet, and service fees on your behalf – the cost of these will be included in the rent. Some tenants find this to be more convenient because it means less individual bills to think about. Others may prefer being able to choose their energy or internet provider.

What is the parking situation?

If you own a car, it could be important to consider the parking situation. Is there a designated parking area for residents? Is it reserved solely for tenants, or can anyone park there? And how far away is the parking lot from your apartment? Some apartment blocks may not have any designated parking at all, which could mean finding somewhere to park on the street, something which could be difficult in heavily developed areas.

Are pets allowed?

Not all landlords allow pets in apartments. If you have pets, you will need to look for somewhere that is pet-friendly. Check listings carefully – if it is not mentioned whether pets are allowed, make sure to check with the property owner or letting agent before you sign any tenancy agreement.

What’s the area like?

The location of an apartment is important to consider, too. Ideally, you want an apartment in a neighborhood that is safe, accessible, and not too noisy. Make sure to consider what public facilities there are in the area, like grocery stores, pharmacies, and restaurants nearby. Public transport links could also be important to consider – especially if you don’t own a car. Make sure that it’s easy to commute to work or easy for your kids to get to school.
