A Beginner’s Guide to the Paleo Diet
If you are here you may be wondering what the Paleo diet is? Well, it is a way of eating modeled after Palaeolithic era when cave men used to “hunt and gather” to get their food. Scientist argue that during the Stone Age, humans did not suffer from diseases like we do now. The Paleo Diet encourages us to go back to eating how we were biologically designed to eat, allowing us to tap into our genetic potential and start living a healthier life.
The first book explaining The Paleo Diet (with the same title) was published in 2002 by Lorn Cordain. Ten years later in 2012, the Paleo diet was one of the biggest diet trends. Still today the Paleo Diet is considered one of the best lifestyle eating options for health and one of the best diets for serious weight loss.
Foods that are NOT allowed on the Paleo Diet:
- grains (bread, pasta, cereal, rice, etc.)
- beans
- legumes
- soy
- dairy
- certain vegetable oils
- refined sugar
- coffee
- processed foods of any kind
- added salt and pepper
Foods that ARE Allowed on the Paleo Diet:
- vegetables & roots
- fruits
- (fruits and veggies should be organic and locally grown)
- meats & eggs (that were grass fed/free range and pasture raised)
- fish (that are wild caught)
- certain fats
- nuts
- seeds
- distilled liqueurs
The Paleo diet may seems strict, however once you have your food lists in order, you simply eat when you are hungry and don’t necessarily stick to timed means. You don’t have to count your calorie intake either because your diet should be by its nature, healthy and balanced.
How Does the Paleo Diet Promote Weight Loss?
Unlike other healthy diets, you cannot have cereals, grains, dairy products, processed food or legumes. The Paleo diet argues that the human body doesn’t need carbohydrates to live well. Grains are touted as being filling and healthy, but for Paleo eaters, a meal with fruits and vegetables and a portion of meat can keep them full for hours, while eating carbohydrate foods can result in their being hungry sooner. This is one of the ways that the Paleo diet causes weight loss…eating less and healthier.
Another way that Paleo supporters believe that the diet promotes weight loss is that the human body is designed to operate a low level of carbohydrates. When there is an absence of carbohydrates, the body will burn the fat stored in the body to produce energy.
Mistakes That Beginners Can Avoid
Two important beginner mistakes you must avoid is an overload of protein intake and not enough fat. This is a common issue with Paleo Diet followers. Eating too much protein to feel full when cutting out carbs is easy to do. Rather than going into the details of the protein needs of adults, I will refer you to an incredible site and article at Paleo Leap that has all the info you need. As far as fats go, there are certain fats that are and are not allowed on the diet, so make sure that you do not remove these “allowed” fats from your foods.
Eating natural foods with no chemicals is what Paleo diet all about. While you will lose weight, it is much more than a weight loss plan, but is a lifestyle that promotes health and wellness. It involves eating real food, unlike the processed foods we eat everyday that contain artificial ingredients that are unnatural and harmful to our bodies. Practice eating the Paleo diet and reach your body’s optimal level of health.

I was wondered what was in a Paleo diet! This is a good explanation. I have never been on this kind of a diet but I think I could do most of it because that list is actually pretty good list. The only thing I know for sure I could not go without is milk because I love milk a lot.
Donna
I hear about this diet a lot but you’ve really simplified it here! Makes sense now!

I could give up carbs, but not coffee! That is asking too much!
Heather
I love the concept, to give up coffee though…I don’t know…maybe I can make slow progress toward paleo and eliminate a few things at a time. I do want to be healthier without worrying about my calorie intake.

Can you drink almond milk on a paleo diet?

We tried the paleo diet for awhile a few years ago. I just couldn’t sustain eating that much meat! At first it was like yay gimme all that bacon, then a few weeks later it was like please please please no more bacon haha!! It works great for some people though!

Great Tips I had been wondering about this diet.

I could never follow a paleo diet. I am more of an “everything in moderation” type of gal. Plus whole grains are super yummy!

This Paleo diet seems very interesting. If those foods photos means Paleo, then I would be happy to engage on this diet trend.

I’ve researched about different diets before I started mine and I love Paleo because it’s all about eating natural/organic food. I think it’s definitely going to be good for your body! This is such a nice guide!

I am a Pescatarian, but I only eat seafood 2 days a week. I tried following Paleo for a while, but many of my proteins come from the very thing this diet doesn’t permit – legumes and beans. Otherwise, though, I do avoid processed foods and most white starchy things. I did discover a deep fondness for sweet potatoes through trying this diet.

I’ve heard of this before but haven’t really tried it. It sounds so easy now that you break them down. I didn’t know it’s a no no to cut off the fat from meat produce. I’m learning new things everyday.

This is hands-down the best thing I’ve seen to explain Paleo to a beginner! I learned some new things! Thank you!

Very helpful and informative! I am doing the Whole30 right now so this was nice to read. Thank you.

Great resource here! I am going to try this now.

I reckon the reason they didn’t suffer the same diseases like we do is because they didn’t live as long as we do. Many diseases are diseases of aging. Times change. 😉

Oh this looks an amazing guide for beginners. I will try this for my husband. He really needs this.

I have considered the paleo diet to help me lose weight. I tried to look online and read about it, but I was basically bombarded with info! This is a nice beginner guide I think! I’ll bookmark this and check it out when I have more time to read it. Thanks!

I’ve thought about giving the paleo diet a try, but I don’t know if I could give up my coffee or dairy! I do need a new weight loss plan though.

I believe that we all have our own personalities and attitudes. Some people might do better jumping right in, but others like you are highly successful by making positive changes over time toward better health. https://jennyatdapperhouse.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php?paged=2#comments-form
