The Beginners Guide to the Keto Diet
There’s a new weight lose diet: the keto or ketogenic diet. This is a low carb, high fat diet that can help you burn fat more effectively. Ketosis is a natural state of the metabolic process. When a person reaches ketosis, their body burns stored fat instead of glucose. This sort of dieting can help a person lose any unwanted fat. However, achieving a state of ketosis is not always easy, so it’s important that you make sure that you know exactly what the keto diet is and how you should go about it. What does Keto mean?
Most people first question where does the word keto come from? In short, the keto in a ketogenic diet allows the body to create small fuel molecules called “ketones”. Ketones is produced by eating very few carbohydrates. This is an alternative fuel source for the body, as the body normally relies on sugar (glucose).
But by following the keto diet, you will have a low sugar supply. So, your body has to find another form of fuel source. The alternative fuel source is created by the liver. What can you eat?
There are plenty of things that you can still eat on this diet. So, you shouldn’t go hungry. One of the main foods that people eat is seafood. The best fish that you can eat is salmon, sardines, mackerel and other fatty fish as they are high in omega-3 fats. Fish is also a great way to help improve your mental health.
With any normal diet, you can eat vegetables. Low carb veggies like cauliflower makes a great substitute for things like rice or mashed potato. You don’t just have to eat healthy food though, for all you cheese lovers out there, you’ll be pleased to know that you can also have cheese on this diet. Eating cheese regularly can help reduce the loss of muscle mass that may occur with aging.
Lastly, you’ll be pleased to know that you can also eat dark chocolate. Now this might come as a huge surprise to most people, but you can do the keto diet and have dark chocolate. Unfortunately, there is a catch which is that you must choose dark chocolate that contains a minimum of 70% cocoa solids (preferably more).
What can’t you eat?
As with any diet there are always things to avoid. The most surprising one being that you should avoid most fruits when it comes to this diet. We all know that fruit it normally considered as a healthy thing, but if you are planning to do the keto diet then you can’t even eat an apple. There are also certain vegetables you can’t have, e.g. potatoes, carrots, parsnips etc…
Another thing to remember is that you can no longer have any grain products, so say goodbye to your breads and anything else. You won’t be able to have them on this diet.
